How much data does The Commons use?

Learn how The Commons helps reduce mobile data use by blocking high-bandwidth apps like TikTok and Instagram during school hours.

Last updated on 14 Nov, 2025

The Commons uses very little mobile data, much less than social media apps like TikTok or Instagram.

Social media apps can use over 1 gigabyte of data per hour, running videos and images nonstop. In comparison, The Commons only uses a few megabytes in a day — that’s more than 1,000 times less than what social apps consume.

In fact, by blocking apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat during the school day, The Commons can help students save mobile data on their phone plans — while also staying more focused in class.

If you’re a parent or caregiver worried about data usage, The Commons is one of the lightest, lowest-impact apps on your student’s device.
