Getting Started

Jailbroken Phone Error

If you're using a jailbroken iPhone, The Commons may not function as expected. Jailbreaking bypasses Apple’s built-in security, and our app relies on those protections to work correctly. That said, here are some steps you can take to get The Commons working as best as possible—without needing to reset your device.

Troubleshooting The Commons on a Jailbroken iPhone

Note: It’s possible your phone came jailbroken if it was purchased secondhand or modified by a previous owner.

1. Manually Recheck All App Permissions

To ensure The Commons works as intended during school hours, make sure the following permissions are enabled:

  • VPN: Filters distracting content during school hours only.
Open the Settings app and go to General > VPN & Device Management. Confirm that the VPN labeled The Commons (or your school name) is installed and Connected. If not, tap it and toggle Status to Connected. (Note: VPN only activates during school hours. It does not track or filter at home.)

  • Location: Determines if the device is on school grounds.
Open Settings, scroll down and tap The Commons. Tap Location, select Always, and ensure Precise Location is toggled ON. This setting is required for automatic school-day filtering.

  • Motion: Helps optimize battery and app performance.
Open Settings, scroll down and tap The Commons. Toggle Motion & Fitness to ON.

  • Notifications: Alerts you if permissions are missing or the app status changes.
Open Settings, scroll down and tap The Commons. Tap Notifications, toggle Allow Notifications to ON, and choose your preferred alert style (we recommend Banners + Sounds).

2. Disable or Adjust Jailbreak Tweaks (If Applicable)

Jailbroken phones often use tweaks like Liberty Lite or XCon to hide jailbreak status from apps. If you're using one of these tools, you may be able to add The Commons to the list of apps where jailbreak detection is hidden. This could help the app run more reliably. While we don’t endorse any specific tools, adjusting these settings may improve performance if you already use them.

3. Update Your iOS Version

Jailbroken phones often run outdated software. If possible, update to the latest version of iOS:

Go to Settings > General > Software Update, and install any available updates. (Note: Updating may remove the jailbreak.)

4. Restart and Test the App

Restart your phone, open The Commons, and check whether your status is updating as expected.

Final Note

If you're still having issues:

Because jailbreaking changes the way Apple devices behave, The Commons may not function 100% correctly. We’ll do our best to support you, but some features might not work as designed unless the phone is running a standard iOS version.
